METAL FRAME CONSTRUCTION & PLASTER BOARD SUPPORT
Gypsum boards are supplied in standard board dimensions of 0.60 or 1.20 m wide, with lengths ranging from 2.00 to 3.00 m and thicknesses from 6.5 to 25 mm, although other dimensions can be produced to order. Plasterboard partitions are usually fixed to a metal frame (more rarely to a wooden one), which consists of:
• the sleepers: elongated metal galvanized rods of cross-section Π, which are fixed to the load-bearing body of the building (floor and ceiling) with screws and plugs and act as guides for the construction of the frame,
• the uprights: vertical galvanized metal bars of cross-section usually Π, fixed to the sleepers, usually every 60 cm, with the free sides of their cross-section parallel to the length of the sleepers,
• the connecting beams (where required), of Π or L cross-section, which transversely connect the uprights to each other and contribute to the stability of the structure.
During installation, the sleepers are fixed to the floor and ceiling with screws, at distances equal to or less than 75 cm and always at three or more points. The uprights step upright into the sleepers and are fixed to them. The end uprights are also bolted to the side walls, again inserting a rubber gasket. Plasterboards are pressed and screwed onto the frame in such a way as to avoid distortions, at a distance usually every 25 cm. The screws must penetrate the plasterboard vertically and penetrate the metal profiles of the frame by at least 10 mm. Their heads must be sunk by about 1 mm into the surface of the plasterboard with a suitable adjustment of the screwdriver, so that they can be grouted.
