KLIMATORIUM, THE INTERNATIONAL CLIMATE CENTER OF DENMARK

Completed by the 3XN Architectural Office and the SLA Landscape Architecture Office the International Climate Center of Denmark, in the town of Lemvig on the west coast of the Nordic country, the Klimatorium, a hub for climate research, the rapid increase in the frequency of storms and water, wooden corrugated facade, a direct reference to the shipbuilding history of the city.
The idea of the architects – as reported by APE – focuses on simplicity, hence the materials used were wood, concrete and steel. The main symbolic feature is a wavy shape, “carved” on the façade; this feature refers to the traditional Lemvig fishing boats. “The stepped wave gives the building a strong identity,” said 3XN architect Jan Ammundsen. “Both internally and externally, it becomes a gathering place and social contact space for Klimatorium staff and visitors, as well as for Lemvig residents.” The SLA office designed the surrounding area to fully integrate the new flood protection works underway at the port. Instead of blocking access to the sea, the landscaping includes a wooden pier which can be used for relaxation or hosting events on the water’s edge. In addition, an area called Climate Corridor offers visitors and the public a green urban space with a pleasant microclimate. 3XN was founded in 1986 in Aarhus and SLN in 1994 as Stig L Andersson Landscape Architects.
