ARCH-E: A COMMON PLATFORM FOR ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN COMPETITIONS IN EUROPE

Arch-E’s main objective is to promote high-quality architectural solutions for the built environment by increasing participation in Architectural Design Competitions (ADC- Architectural Design Competitions) in Europe and overcoming cross-border barriers in the market for architectural services.
ADC competitions are determined by national frameworks and due to the lack of relevant information, transnational participation is very low, many Architects are excluded from participating in the (cross-border) market and competition is thus hindered. Small and Medium Enterprises – with an above-average percentage of women and/or young architects – are particularly affected, which has a negative impact on their professional careers.
The promotion of ADCs could lead to a better implementation of the Davos Declaration on Baukultur and the New European Bauhaus in European design and European construction projects on a daily basis and contribute to addressing the climate challenge and improving the quality of the built environment.
As a post on the TEE website informs, the newly developed Arch-E electronic platform provides a wider range of information about ADC systems (with a special emphasis on examining the Baukultur and New Bauhaus standards). Main features of the Arch-E platform are, among others, the Arch E Map (ARCH-E ADC map), a comparative description of the national ADC systems, the multilingual Arch-E glossary (Glossary) with technical terms, and the ARCH-E Network which connects architecture professionals across Europe and abroad to discuss and analyze ADCs and furthermore to form transnational groups and working groups to participate and collaborate in architectural design competitions. A key element is a network of >500 architects from >20 countries from which transnational working groups can be rapidly ‘recruited’ to participate in ADCs, which is particularly important for women and young professionals who typically have fewer transnational business contacts.
The ARCH-E team recently published The ARCH-E Research Package on how Architectural Design Competitions (ADCs) are implemented across Europe. The platform is available from the link: https://www.arch-e.eu/ The full text The ARCH-E Research Package.
