HET PARK VAN MORGEN: THE PARK WITH ELECTRICAL ENERGY GENERATION AND LIGHTING FROM PLANTS
Rotterdam has become the first city in the world to have a park with plant-powered lighting, a completely eco-friendly and interactive concept, and they hope to use it on a large scale.
The Park of Tomorrow is a small green space in the IJsselmonde district in Reyeroord that has become one of the most touristic spots in the city. The innovative urban park guarantees a special experience for its visitors.
The power plants react to the presence of the world, making the visit fun and different.
What was sought to be achieved is that small lights powered by electricity generating units transmit their light, a technology they claim is completely green. Electricity is generated during the day and night to provide a show in the afternoon.
For those who still have doubts about its operation, we will explain briefly. As we all know, plants produce organic matter through photosynthesis so some of it is released into the soil through their roots. The soil contains bacteria that help break down the material and in turn, release electrons in the process.
So basically the electrons will be captured and transferred through a wire to all the lights. It may sound a bit impossible but it is real.
” In addition to the fact that this technology is extremely high-tech, it is also very poetic. Because the energy suddenly comes alive and thus brings people and nature closer.
When you walk through this green lane in the dark, you feel that the lighting is alive and you allow yourself to be amazed by the power of nature. ” commented designer Ermi van Oers.
One of the initiatives implemented with the project is to utilize the surface of the city in the best possible way, they also supported biodiversity and most importantly, significantly reduced greenhouse gas emissions while creating light at the same time.
” In Reyeroord we chose an approach that focuses on the wishes and dreams of the residents. Here, the main innovations of the city are transferred to the street. From the energy transition, climate adaptation, the fight against poverty to the implementation of environmental law. thus we see Reyeroord as an exemplary neighborhood of the future. It is one of the innovative projects in the IJsselmonde area commented the councilor Bert Wijbenga.”
The prototype or concept of this type of park is still in the research and development period, however it is an interesting option for future generations.
It is not only about being able to have green electricity but also about making people aware of its excessive use.
In the meantime, we will have to wait for the results of this fantastic idea, since the project managers commented that the success rate depends on many factors, including the weather.
