The title “intelligens” will be the 19th Architecture Biennale of Venice
The title and theme of the 19th Venice Architecture Biennale has been announced as “Intellectuals. Natural. Artificial. Collective”.
Curator Carlo Ratti explained that the title of the exhibition is usually announced in both English and Italian, but for 2025 it will be condensed into a single Latin word: intelligens.
While associated with the modern term “intelligence,” Ratti emphasized the last syllable of the word, “gens,” which is Latin for “people.” He suggested that the word could evoke a future form of collective intelligence, specifically the new frontier of artificial intelligence.
The exhibition promises to draw on an expansive realm of art, engineering, biology, data science and many other disciplines, connecting them to urban space and the pressing issue of the climate crisis.
It will be based on four pillars he said as part of the announcement, made together with the President of La Biennale di Venezia, Pietrangelo Buttafuoco.
The first “Transdisciplinarity”, will see architectural projects realized through collaborations between many professionals, with an emphasis on advancing scientific knowledge.
The ‘Living Lab’ is set to use a series of special projects around Venice and the Biennale grounds, while the Central Pavilion in the Giardini is closed for renovation.
The public is invited to submit ideas via the Biennale’s website under a third pillar, ‘Space for Ideas’, which includes a collaborative approach to design.
Finally, the Circularity Protocol will develop a manifesto to set a new standard for the future of cultural events.
